The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Congress of Nigeria , Dr. Oby Ezekwesili has revealed that parents in Nigeria need incentives to send their girls to school.
She said this in response to a question asked by Bisola Aiyeola , a former housemate of the Big Brother Naija reality TV show , who wanted to know the plans of the presidential candidates for the girl child.
Ezekwesili said , “ It was particularly painful to me that girls who went to school in Chibok , Dapchi and other communities were being attacked to instil fear.
“ Getting girls in school is a priority , especially for a country like ours , who desires to develop . First , we will give incentives to the parents of the girls to want to send them to school. The issues stopping girls from going to school range from cultural to social .
“ We will also give incentives to girls, so that they want to go to school. And one way to do that is for them to have role models. Role models are important in this . Having female teachers will help. ”
She added that empowering women economically is a smart investment for any nation .
The presidential debate was organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria , on Saturday
