We are inspired to beat Bayern Munich – Wenger
Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal’s quarterfinal victory over Everton in the FA Cup has given his side a huge confidence boost ahead of the tie with Bayern Munich.
The Gunners beat Everton 4-1 to progress to the last four for only the second time since winning the competition back in 2005, which was also the same year they last lifted silverware.
Arsenal trail holders Bayern 2-0 in the last 16 of the Champions League following the first-leg loss at the Emirates, but manager Wenger insists they will head to Germany with the belief of turning around the deficit.
“It was important for us to win, to put us in a good mind on the psychological front,” Wenger said. “We can be inspired by our focus on the day, by our desire and go to Bayern with the same spirit.”
Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League 12 months ago on away goals after defeating Bayern 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, and Wenger is hoping his side can put in a similar display on Tuesday night to upset the odds.
“The statistics go against us when we go to Bayern, but let’s make sure that the performance goes for us. Then we have a chance,” Wenger said.
The Frenchman also reflected on Mesut Ozil’s first goal since he netted versus Everton in the Premier League in December.
He added: “It’s important for him and the way he took his chance — sometimes you want him to take more of the chances, because he always spots a good pass.
“What I liked about him was that he looked physically regenerated, more power in this runs, and he did a lot of dirty work for a player like him, he tracked back on the counter-attack with some long runs.”
