Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, has admitted that they are lucky to still be in the Champions League, after they qualified 3-2 on aggregate, despite losing 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The La Liga side were strong favourites to progress into the semis, but Angel Di Maria saw an early penalty saved, before Marco Reus bagged a first-half brace to give his team a chance.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan struck the post in the second half, while Iker Casillas needed to be alert to produce some excellent saves, as Jurgen Klopp’s men threatened to turn the tie on its head.

Ancelotti says they almost paid the price for a poor performance in the return leg.

“All games at this stage are very difficult,” Ancelotti told reporters. “We are fortunate to be through to the semi-finals.

“We’re happy to reach the semis, but not happy as we suffered a lot. Especially in the first half. We opened the tie up again.

“We were better in the second half. Football is like that, we gave away gifts, made lots of errors, we had no confidence and we suffered because of it.

“Casillas made fantastic saves in important moments of the game. His game was very, very good.”
