Lahm Announces Retirement Plans.
Bayern Munich captain Phillip Lahm says he will retire at the Bundesliga champions when his contract expires in 2018, rather than wind down his career abroad.
The 31-year-old has been with Bayern since he was a teenager, and recently retired from international football after winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany, and he intends to end his club career on a similar high.
“My contract with Bayern expires in 2018,” Lahm said, quoted inL’Equipe. “I will be 34 by then, that will be the right time to end my career. I don’t see myself making the move to Qatar or the USA. I want to end my active career while I’m still on top of my game.”
Although he has set a date on his retirement, and has already won every trophy a footballer could desire, Lahm is hoping to claim some more silverware before he hangs up his boots in three years.
“I want to win another Champions League title with Bayern,” he said. “It’s the biggest goal I have now and I think we can even win it this season. Our main rivals are Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona.”
Die Roten look well on course to retain the Bundesliga title as they are eleven points ahead at the top during the current winter break, and will face Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions knockout rounds in February.
