Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the Ekiti state Governor-elect has slammed Governor Kayode Fayemi, for saying he did not concede defeat in the June 21 gubernatorial election after his earlier concession.
Fayose said this during a programme monitored on a local radio station in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday. According to reports from Punch, Fayose said that Fayemi’s sudden reversal was to add a little bite to the petition of the All Progressives Congress before the Ekiti Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
Reacting to Fayose’s statement, the Director of Media and Publcity of the Ekiti APC, Mr. Segun Dipe, described Fayose’s statement as unguarded, reckless and uncalled for. He said,
“Fayemi is intelligent and doesn’t speak arbitrarily. There is a difference between concession and acceptance. He never accepted the defeat. He said he will not go to court and he has not gone to court, so where has he recanted?
“People should not be in a hurry to wrest power because they don’t even know what to do with the power. This man is not a politician who says things without taking cognizance of his words; his words are precious to him.
“He doesn’t believe the results based on his efforts, hardwork and campaign. he does not believe that is what the people have given him.” Fayose said APC and its leaders felt that by accepting defeat, Fayemi had shot their suit in the foot. He said,
“But they are still wrong. Their case has nothing to stand on. They did the same thing in 2003 when I defeated Otunba Niyi Adebayo and the result was that they came back empty-handed.
“APC won in only 16 wards out of 177 wards in the state during the election. Fayemi called me by himself for a meeting after the poll and congratulated me and promised that we will work together for a smooth transition.
“We submitted names for the membership of the Transition Committee and we are yet to hear anything from them. If one is inconsistent he will end up making himself a jester.”
