The body of a 31-year- old young man who feel into 30-feet well at Amikanle road, Agbado Okeodo local government area of Lagos, while pursuing a mysterious goat, has been retrieved by men of the Lagos State Fire Service.
The sad incident happened at about 8a.m on January 28, 2015, where the man, whose name was given as Ade, a bricklayer, fell into the well while trying to catch the mysterious goat.
The tragedy was said to be so sudden that nobody could rescue him because of the depth of the well.
The diseased was said to be hale and hearty before the ugly incident which cut short his life.
When his remains were later pulled out by the men of the state fire service before it was taken to the Alagbado Divisional Police Station, his head was full of deep cuts.
The death has remained a mystery to his neighbours as they could not explain how the victim fell into the well while trying to catch the goat.
While some were wailing, others accepted it as fate in life and others described it as a colossal waste of life.
The late Ade who was said to be married with three children was said to have come to the street with some his friends.
On citing the goat, he was said to have left his friends and started pursuing it, but while the animal jumped over the well, Ade suddenly fell inside.
Daily Independent gathered that Ade was an easy going person in the neighbourhood.
According to some eye witnesses, the victim and his colleagues usually patronize a particular woman in the street who sells local herbs before setting out for the day’s work.
Such was the case when the diseased sighted the goat and started pursing it but never knew it would lead to his death.
“We came here and he started pursing the goat and when the goat jumped the well, I did not see Ade again, and when I looked I knew he was inside the well,’’ cried Bayo, one of his colleagues.
A woman who lives in the area corroborated Bayo’s claim, saying the victim acted as if something tele-guided him.
“Immediately he saw the goat, he started following it and immediately he fell inside the well”, she said.
Daily Independent also spoke to Kehinde Yusuf and a woman who simply described herself as Iya Tobi who were mourning the victim.
They described his death as mysterious.
Yusuf said that immediately Ade fell inside the well they did not see him again because of the water level.
Wole Ola, another resident of the street, wondered why the owner of the compound could not cover the well until the tragedy.
Ola who spoke in tears, said “All I will ask the police to do is to make sure they arrest the owner of the house for leaving the well open until it claimed the life of this young man.’’
Efforts by our correspondent to speak with the landlord of the house proved abortive as no one identified himself as the owner of the house.
But according to one resident, Michael Tinu, the death of Ade is a big loss to everyone in the area.
He said it is time for authorities to come into the area to take ask questions how landlords build their houses in the community.
