Manchester United are prepared to offer £1.5million a year to youngster Angel Gomes amid interest from Chelsea.
The 19-year-old’s contract at United expires on June 30 and he is yet to agree terms on a new deal after rejecting an offer of £20,000 a week in January.
The England Under-20 international is thought to be a long-term prospect for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United view Gomes as one of their prized young assets.
With Gomes’s future in the air, Manchester United have put together a new offer in a bid to convince him to stay at the club rather than leave for free this summer.
The Telegraph claim that the new deal on the table is worth almost £30,000 a week, with bonuses for appearances, goals and trophies won.
Gomes is already thought to be on £17,000 a week, meaning his weekly salary would rise by around £13,000.
United hope the boost in pay will have the same effect it did on Dutch forward Tahith Chong, who was a target for Italian giants Inter Milan.
Like Gomes, Chong was out of contract this summer and unsure about his future before United tied him down to a new deal..
The attacking midfielder, who made his first-team debut at 16 and was United’s young player of the year in 2018, has attracted interest from a number European giants including Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund.
Having only played six times in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, Gomes reportedly rejected United’s previous offer as he wants guaranteed first-team football.
Frank Lampard is a massive advocate of promoting youth, with the likes of Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James having all developed under him this term.
Solskjaer has also brought young talent into the United first team over the last 18 months, as seen with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood.
Nevertheless, Gomes is said to have recruited super-agent Pini Zahavi, who is believed to have held talks with Chelsea transfer chief Marina Granovskaia.
