Real Madrid missed the chance to consolidate their leadership position at the summit of the La Liga table, after they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Athletic Bilbao in their Week 26 league fixture on Saturday.

The Basque hosts showed that they meant business, as they stifled their illustrious opponents from Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and they didn’t give any room for maneuvers’.

Bilbao took the lead in the 26th minute, when Rico floated brilliant pull out into the area and Aduriz leapt above Pepe with a well-placed header that didn’t give Iker Casillas any chance.

Real woke up from their slumber, but their efforts didn’t come to fruition and the opening stanza ended with Bilbao leading with a 1 nil advantage.

Meanwhile, the second half of the game witnessed missed chances from ‘Los Blancos’ trio of Bale, Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. Real failed to surmount Bilbao’s defence and went home empty handed, after centre referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco brought proceedings to an end.
