Meta Finally Lifts Trump’s Remaining Facebook, Instagram Restrictions
Meta has lifted all remaining restrictions on former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts ahead of the upcoming Republican convention next week.
Nick Clegg, Meta’s global affairs president, announced on Friday that with the Republican and Democratic national conventions approaching and the formal nomination of presidential candidates underway, both parties’ nominees should have equal opportunity for political expression.
Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were initially suspended indefinitely in January 2021 following the Capitol attack, due to his posts perceived as endorsing violence.
Although access was partially restored in 2023 with restrictions, Meta decided to fully lift these penalties on Friday.
Clegg described the initial ban as an exceptional decision made under extraordinary circumstances.
