Gary Neville has revealed that former United’s coach, David Moyes was absolutely destined to fail.
Former Manchester United first team coach Phil Neville has revealed that former United manager David Moyes was destined for failure at Old Trafford.
Neville, a former defender for the Red Devils, has spoken out as to why things went pear-shaped for the former Everton boss and revealedthe troubles they experienced in the dressing room to British tabloidThe Daily Mail.
“There were some things we did that were good, and some things we did that we could have done better,” Neville told UK’sThe Daily Mail.
“But part of me also thinks it was an impossible job; that maybe David Moyes was never going to succeed. I almost wonder whether the club needed the David Moyes era to then be able to move on in the Louis van Gaal era,” he added.
The 37-year-old footballer-turned-coach obtained a UEFA B Licence while still contracted to Everton, but pursued his coaching career on a full-time basis after retiring in 2013.
Neville was appointed first team coach under Moyes, following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, and explained that the players didn’t take well to the new manager, which is why they struggles to continue where they left off under Ferguson.
“There was a resistance to change,” said the former England international.
“But look, Alex Ferguson was God. And had I still been a player I would have probably been the same. I’d have been saying ‘this is what we do and this is how we’ve been successful’.
“If you asked the players about our training, I think they’d say they enjoyed it. But it was probably the resistance to change that was the big thing; someone else coming in and trying to do things a little bit differently, although only a little bit differently,” he said.
