Activities went to sleep in Kano on Friday over the death of the Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

Commercial activities were shut down and schools were also closed in the entire metropolis as people of the emirate trooped to attend the emirs’ funeral prayer.

Journalists in the commercial city reported that people were seen reciting the Holy Quran in every nook and cranny, as they prayed for the repose of the emir’s soul.

Kano Emirate Council had earlier in the day officially confirmed the emir’s death in a radio broadcast.

Walin Kano, Alhaji Mahe Bashir Wali, one of the emirate council’s senior councilor said in the broadcast that Alhaji Bayero gave up the ghost Friday morning and will be buried in the evening.

“I can confirm that to the people that Almighty Allah has taken away the lives of our beloved emir,” said Wali in the broadcast.

Eulogoies and elegies have filled the media as prominent Nigerians including President Goodluck Jonathan spoke about the departed emir’s wisdom and leadership.

The monarch died weeks after returning from a medical vacation in London.

He last appeared in an official engagement last Friday while installing wazirin Kano.

Alhaji Ado Bayero was 84.
