Security has been beefed up in the Kaduna State capital and environs ahead of proceedings at the Kaduna State High Court.

This comes ahead of a ruling on the bail application filed by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Justice Darius Khobo will rule on the application filed by the Shiites’ leader who is seeking permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.

There is also tight security at the entrance and exit points of the court complex.

The bail hearing which will take place on Monday comes barely three days after a Federal High Court in Abuja granted the Federal Government the power to proscribe the group.

But a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and El-Zakzaky’s lawyer, Femi Falana, condemned the government’s action, describing it as illegal.

The government took the decision following a series of protests by the Shiites in Abuja, the nation’s capital to demand the release of their leader who has been in detention for more than three years.

However, recent protests by the group turned violent as they clashed with the police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

These clashes left many injured and several dead, including a youth corps member serving with Channels Television, Precious Owolabi and a Deputy Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command.

As part of the strategies put in place for a smooth process of the court on Monday, the police have diverted traffic in specific locations and all roads leading to the court complex.

They also deployed security operatives in identified flashpoints within the state capital, in order to avert any breakdown of law and order before, during and after the court sitting.
